Learn the Story Behind the Visionary

The Future of History

Plant Riverside District is the vision of Richard Kessler who set out to reimagine Savannah’s historic site and create an entertainment district that truly has something for everyone. Kessler founded The Kessler Collection in 1984, a growing portfolio of nine true boutique hotels. The organization is a founding member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and has established itself as an innovative leader, trusted partner and proven producer of unique destinations, restaurants and exceptional experiences.

In his Plant Riverside District project, Kessler will treat guests to a sensory wonderland that stretches across eras. A journey of time, from 18th century to present, will be carried through each thoughtfully designed detail and felt in every artful offering.

of Progress

As the city’s original freight port and site of its large, coal fired power plant built in 1912, Plant Riverside District’s history is still very much present. Plant Riverside District represents the beauty of progress—connecting history to present, Savannah’s legendary river with its storied community, and all who visit, to the generations of our future.

  9. How will the project work to preserve the original Power Plant building?

It is a main priority of The Kessler Collection to restore the 1912 historic Power Plant building back to its original condition so locals and visitors will have the chance to enjoy the magnificent architecture and beauty of the design. During the early 1900s, power plants were viewed as public edifices, resulting in significant civic design emphasis in the architecture. Kessler is taking all measures to preserve all original materials, working with architects that specialize in historic preservation.

  10. Will you keep the Plant’s smokestacks?

Yes, Plant Riverside District’s iconic 176–foot tall smokestacks are features of the Savannah skyline. They’ll continue to anchor the west end of River Street, serving as a marker for the site’s rich history and drawing visitors into the district.

  11. Is the Project designed to be Sustainable?

We aim to create an earth friendly, sustainable District. We’ve designed it using cutting edge sustainable building and site development practices, including advanced energy recovery technology, many reclaimed materials, excellent insulation, as well as efficient low-flow plumbing fixtures and a high efficiency central plant, serving heating and cooling needs of the major buildings in the District.

  12. How will Plant Riverside District connect with the River?

Plant Riverside District will enhance both views and direct access to the riverfront, with multiple public connections back to the city and a quarter mile of new public riverwalk. There has been no public riverfront access in this area for over 100 years, so we are looking forward to reconnecting it all once again.

  13. What economic impact is this development expected to create?

Aside from providing Savannah visitors with more to experience in the city, the project will create approximately 700 jobs and is projected to provide a 4:1 economic impact, funneling new revenue back to the city and state.
